Málaga Viva Lab, run by Diputación de Málaga, hosts a pilot bat conservation and monitoring project in a space for environmental experimentation in response to climate change.
What we have done
We installed five double-chamber bat boxes in trees, with adjustable fixings and georeferenced locations. We carried out an initial four-night ultrasonic recording campaign to establish a baseline for nocturnal activity.
Purpose
The network allows us to check bat box occupancy and relate field observations to acoustic activity in the surrounding area. Subsequent visits will help assess locations, guide maintenance and decide on further conservation measures based on data. Acoustic records describe activity; they are not a count of individuals.
Monitoring status
Installation of the pilot network was completed on 10 July 2026. Monitoring continues; subsequent results must be interpreted using the same protocol so that campaigns can be compared.
