Since 2025, we have studied nocturnal bat activity at SELWO Aventura Estepona with Fundación Parques Reunidos. The project combines inspections of a network of 15 bat boxes with analysis of ultrasonic recordings.
Results of the May 2026 campaign
Over four complete nights, 8,160 acoustic passes were validated, including 1,005 feeding buzzes. At least nine species or acoustic taxa were detected. Passes describe activity and must not be interpreted as a count of individuals.
Use of the bat boxes
In February 2026, a Pipistrellus bat was confirmed in one of the boxes. No individuals were observed during the May inspection of all 15 boxes. Repeated monitoring will help study seasonal variation and assess locations.
Next steps
Recordings from subsequent campaigns must be analysed and validated before they are added to the public results series.
