Microclimas brings together bat conservation, environmental education and public participation in Guaro, Almargen and Pizarra, with support from Diputación Provincial de Málaga and Fundación Bancaria Unicaja as part of Málaga Viva.
Conservation infrastructure
Nine georeferenced bat boxes were installed. The network facilitates subsequent inspections and allows evidence of use and maintenance needs to be documented without reporting occupancy where it has not yet been confirmed.
Outreach in three municipalities
The Bat Night events combined talks, virtual reality experiences and walks with ultrasonic detectors. Around 130 people took part in the activities across the three municipalities.
What the project contributes
The programme introduces local communities to nocturnal wildlife and establishes a network of bat boxes that can be monitored over time. It also supported the development of MUMA BATS 360, an immersive tool for environmental interpretation.
Continuing the work
Inspections of the network will help establish how it is used and guide improvements. Acoustic activity recorded during the events supports outreach and observation of the surroundings; it does not, on its own, represent population size.
